This plant is closely associated with beach greens (Honckenya peloides). They both grow on sandy beaches and people use them in a similar manner. People gather the leaves, when the plants are young and tender, before the plants flower. They can be added to boiling meat, fried with onion or put in salads. In Lorino and Lavrentiya, some people add them to fermenting roseroot (Rhodiola integrifolia) leaves and stems. This was one plant that people relied on during the economically tough years of the 1990s, when very little food was available in stores.
