ELOKA is currently collaborating with Indigenous community members of the Hudson Bay region, Baffin Island, and Greenland. Not only are they observing and reporting changes in their environment, they are also sharing wisdom that has long been gleaned from generations of living in an Arctic environment, thereby providing a valuable link to science.

The purpose of The Northern Bering Sea: Our Way of Life is to show extensive areas where Alaska Native hunters and local fishermen harvest ocean resources, and the marine waters important to the resources we rely on. It illustrates that the whole northern Bering Sea is the storehouse that supports our way of life.

Sea Ice in the Belcher Islands, Nunavut, Canada

Hunters describe their observations of sea ice conditions around the Belcher Islands gathered from their many hunting expeditions. The local and traditional knowledge (LTK) gathered from these interviews reveals that the ice is changing and becoming more dangerous and less predictable than it once was.

Silalirijiit Project: Kangiqtugaapik (Clyde River), Nunavut, Canada, Weather Station Network

This site provides access to the current weather conditions at Akuliaqattak, Silasiutitalik, and Ailaktalik, located in Kangiqtugaapik (Clyde River), Nunavut. Meteorological measurements are displayed in near-real time, and include air and ground temperature, wind direction and speed, and humidity. Content is provided in both English and Inukitut.

Yupik Environmental Knowledge Project

Over the last ten years the Calista Elders Council (CEC) staff has worked with elders from Bering Sea coastal communities to document Yup'ik place names. Elders have been eager to teach young people their rich history and named places of their homeland, including camp and settlement sites, rivers, sloughs, rocks, ponds, even sandbars and underwater channels. More than 3,000 names have been identified. Also included are Yup'ik views on the importance of place names, the land, values, and language.
